Expert Custom Millwork
Millwork Is What Separates a Good Home from a Great One
You can have the best flooring in Utah, the finest furniture, and impeccable paint — but it's the millwork that makes a room feel truly finished. Built-in shelving that makes a blank wall actually useful. Board-and-batten wainscoting that gives a dining room weight and character. A coffered ceiling that changes how a room feels the moment you walk in.
Pine River Construction has been crafting custom millwork for Utah homeowners for 30+ years, and it's become one of our defining differentiators in a market crowded with flooring-only contractors. The Price family — Bob, Wes, Jay, and Derek — approaches millwork the same way we approach every project: we listen to what you're trying to achieve, we design to your vision rather than push catalog options, and we build it ourselves. No subcontractors. No hand-offs. The same crew that designs your project is the crew that installs it.

Flooring & Millwork Together
How Millwork Adds Home Value in Utah
In Utah's competitive real estate market, custom millwork consistently stands out during home tours and appraisals. Built-ins, wainscoting, coffered ceilings, and custom mantels are features that buyers notice and remember. Unlike furniture, they stay with the home and contribute directly to perceived and appraised value. In markets like Park City, Draper, and Highland where buyers expect high finish levels, custom millwork is often the detail that justifies a premium asking price.
Because Pine River does both flooring and millwork, we're uniquely positioned to help you design a home interior that's cohesive from floor to ceiling. We match stain colors between floors and built-ins. We coordinate wood species between treads, flooring, and cabinetry. We size baseboards and casings to work proportionally with wide-plank floors. This integrated approach is something most contractors simply can't offer.
Both MDF and solid wood have their place. MDF is ideal for painted millwork — stable, smooth, and won't expand with humidity changes. Solid wood is superior for stained applications where grain is a feature, and for high-wear shelving surfaces. We use the best material for each component of every project.
Common Questions
Custom Millwork FAQ
Carpentry covers the structural side of working with wood in construction. Millwork refers to the finish woodwork — trim, built-ins, wainscoting, mantels — that gives a home its character and refinement. It's the detail work that separates a finished interior from an exceptional one.
Single pieces like a mantel or built-in bookcase take 1 to 2 weeks from design approval to installed. Larger projects — whole-room wainscoting, coffered ceilings, full mudroom systems — run 3 to 6 weeks. We provide a clear project schedule with every estimate.
That depends on your home's style and your existing finishes. Painted millwork (typically MDF) is crisp, timeless, and works in any style home. Stained millwork (solid wood or veneer) adds warmth and natural grain. Many of our best projects use both — painted trim alongside stained built-ins, for example.
Absolutely. Matching existing trim profiles is something we've done for 30+ years — from Victorian-era molding to custom contemporary profiles. We bring samples to your home and refine the match until it's seamless before cutting full runs.
We primarily serve residential clients, but we do select commercial projects — especially offices, reception spaces, and specialty retail. Contact us with the details of your project and we'll let you know if it's a fit.
